A new and exciting club has emerged at Arroyo High School, bringing students together to celebrate and learn about Latinx heritage: the Latino Union Club. Founded by junior Emiliano De la Torre, this club was created with the goal of providing an inclusive space where students can come together to appreciate Latinx culture and traditions. Inspired by the success of the school’s Asian Culture Club, Emiliano took the initiative to start the club and fill a gap he saw in cultural representation at Arroyo, “I decided to start this club because I felt as if our school didn’t offer many opportunities to learn about Latinx heritage,” Emiliano explained. “I took inspiration from the Asian Culture Club and decided to take my own initiative.”
One of Emiliano’s favorite aspects of running the club is organizing the fun and engaging activities that bring everyone together. “Just a while ago, we had a Quesadilla-making activity, which was really fun to organize and participate in with all our members,” he shared. Along with cooking activities, the club also hosts educational Kahoot quizzes and recognizes “Members of the Month,” giving students a chance to celebrate each other’s contributions.
The mission of the Latino Union Club goes beyond just learning about Latinx culture.
Emiliano hopes to create a welcoming space where students of all backgrounds feel encouraged to participate and share their own cultures. “I want to teach students about Latinx culture while also welcoming different cultures into the club,” he said. His ultimate goal is to inspire students to take initiative and start projects of their own, just like he did with the Latino Union Club. “By doing this, I hope to encourage students to start whatever they want at school.”
Looking ahead, Emiliano has big plans for the future of the club. “Some activities I hope to do include potlucks, cultural food-making sessions, educational Kahoots, fiestas, and even movie nights!” These events will not only help students connect but also provide opportunities to explore Latinx culture in a fun and engaging way.
As for Emiliano’s future, he hopes to attend a four-year college after high school and study Political Science. He also plans to continue developing projects that can make a positive impact on others, especially those focused on cultural awareness and community-building.
