This year’s AP Calculus exams have once again highlighted our Knights and their dedication to learning. With record breaking scores reaching up to nearly 100%, Mr. Wong’s Calculus BC is sure to make the Arroyo High School history books every year. Students around campus know that this isn’t just a typical math class when you have Mr. Wong. His true passion for teaching has impacted hundreds of students over the years. Since 2011, the passing rates for Calculus BC has an overall average of 93.4%.
Although learning new material will always be difficult for somebody in the end, students can agree on this one thing: engagement is one of the most important factors of teaching. By keeping his teaching style consistent, Mr. Wong’s exceptional reputation remains alive for over a decade.
After 30 years of dedicating himself to hundreds of students, Mr. Wong was recognized by the District for his spectacular teaching. “I feel grateful, lucky, and honored, because you can see when they called my name it took me a few seconds to step up there. It took me 30 years to receive that award. It’s not easy, I don’t take credit for all this. This honor belongs to all my students, our school, and my colleagues for their support. I always feel appreciated.” said Mr. Wong. After receiving his award, he gives all the credit to his students who have rewarded him by their great scores and learning skills.
Mr. Wong and his dedication has surely not gone unnoticed. With returning students and past students, Mr. Wong has always done his best to encourage his students to do the best they can. “Don’t discourage them,” he said. “If they don’t do well don’t break them, instead find a way they can do well. It is not their fault, they need a role model.” said Mr. Wong.
Even after graduation, past students still recognize Mr. Wong for his hard work and helpful advice. “I think Mr. Wong’s class was definitely one of the most helpful classes I took throughout my high school experience and not just because of the type of teacher he was, but also because he made it known that he cared about his students, “ said previous calculus student Miley Valdibia. Miley made it clear how much Mr. Wong’s dedication towards his students made this AP class more simple. The amount of time and effort that was put into these students made it better for the students’ learning.
“I feel like you’re never really ready for an exam but when I started it I was more confident in myself because I knew Mr. Wong had made sure I understood everything I needed to get the score I deserved,” said Miley.
