At Arroyo School, the Athlete of the Month award is given to students who show exceptional dedication, skill, and leadership both on and off the field. This month, we are proud to honor Johnny Vargas, a hardworking and determined student-athlete who has truly earned this recognition.

Johnny’s dedication to basketball and academics is undeniable. As Coach Lopez puts it, “Johnny is a very dedicated and hardworking kid. He has worked hard on the court and in the classroom. Johnny has started every game this season, scoring points, handling the ball, and playing great defense. He is a hard worker who is only going to get better because of his effort and determination. His hard work has allowed him to mature into a young adult, and I’m glad he’s on my team.”

Johnny’s commitment is evident in everything he does. He has been playing basketball since the 1st grade, and his passion for the game continues to drive him. When asked about being selected as Athlete of the Month, Johnny shared, “It feels pretty rewarding to be selected for athlete of the month. One thing that motivates me to keep going is my team and the things that we can accomplish when we all work together.”

As the team’s Point Guard, Johnny knows that his role is critical in driving the team’s success. “I contribute my work ethic and always try to motivate my teammates,” he said. Johnny’s leadership extends beyond the court, as he strives to be a positive influence on his fellow athletes.

One of Johnny’s favorite memories was when the team made an incredible comeback against Mountain View. “We were down by 10, but we came back and won. That was such a memorable moment for me,” he recalled.

Johnny enjoys playing basketball because it’s not only fun but also a chance to build friendships. He encourages others to get involved in the sport, saying, “I would recommend people to join the sport. It’s a good way to make friends and it teaches you real-world skills.” His humble and determined attitude makes Johnny an excellent role model. “Opportunities don’t happen, you have to create them,” he advises.

In addition to his athletic skills, Johnny’s discipline and commitment to improving both as a player and as a student make him a standout individual. His constant drive to do better, whether it’s on the basketball court or in the classroom, sets him apart from his peers. With his unwavering work ethic, there’s no doubt that Johnny Vargas will continue to accomplish great things both on and off the court.
