As the season is coming to an end, senior varsity volleyball player, Nghi Nguyen, is awarded Athlete of the Month. Nghi Nygen dedicates her hard work and truly shines during every game. Her commitment to the team, relentless effort, and leadership on the court make her an invaluable asset. Nghi constantly pushes herself to improve and inspires her teammates to elevate their game as well.
Nghi Nguyen expresses her gratitude for this recognition stating, “It feels encouraging since I would’ve never thought I’d be nominated.” With four years of experience under her belt, she has been consistently pushing herself to improve while encouraging her teammates to elevate their games alongside her.
Coach Katy Melvey speaks highly of Nghi, describing her as “dedicated and responsible.” She adds, “Nghi is our Varsity captain. She is the glue that holds the team together. She always has kind words, is fiercely dedicated, and always works her hardest on the court. Her leadership is strong and she is a great communicator on and off the court.” These attributes have not only strengthened team dynamics but have also fostered a supportive environment for all players.
Throughout her volleyball journey, Nghi has relied on her teammates and coaches for motivation, “My teammates and Coaches inspire me to keep going,” she shares. “When I’m in a game, my main focus is to do my job as a right side on the court since volleyball is a team sport and it’s important that each of us do our jobs to succeed as a team.“ she explains.
Reflecting on her growth this season, Nghi notes, “I think that throughout the season, I’ve gotten a lot better at serving and receiving. I used to not be very good at serving, however, when I started building my confidence in my serves, it also helped me become more confident in passing which helped me improve in both of those areas.” This not only enhances her skills but also sets an example for her teammates.
One of Nghi’s favorite memories from her volleyball career is practicing in the gym with her teammates. She enjoys the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team sport. “Volleyball is fun because it’s not a contact sport, and you can form lasting friendships,” she says. Nghi encourages others to join the sport, “It’s a really fun sport to play and you can make a lot of friends “ Her parting words resonate with anyone pursuing their passions, “Do what you enjoy and what makes you happy.” Says Nghi.
