The coming of A Minecraft Movie has spawned numerous debates and mockery of the designs and film decisions. Their later actions concerning the many copyright claims have only upped the tick speed of fire spread.
A Minecraft Movie has been a long time coming since the announcement of it back in 2014. Yet the first impressions of the actual film last year in September did not evoke a very pleasant reaction. The designs looked AI generated and the use of live action was heavily criticized by the internet. Many variations of ‘fixing’ the Minecraft movie trailer or making it ‘better’ has quickly spawned after its viewing.
Early negative reactions have slightly mellowed after the following trailers. In fact, the trailers have become the least of the movie’s problems.
Recently, Warner Bros has abused its copyright over many creators, including the music created by C418. For those that are unaware, C418 has stated anyone may use his music, which is owned by him, as long as he was credited and it was in an unaltered form. This musician is also a separate entity from Mojang as a freelance artist.
Which makes the crazy amount of copyrighting Warner Bros has been doing very unreasonable. The studio is copyrighting music that they do not own nor have the proper legal rights over. It would make sense if it was content from the movie that is being striked, but the music by C418 is not within their realm of control.
On a lighter note, the internet, or at least the Minecraft portion, was having a field day with each trailer. Numerous jokes and memes have arised from how ridiculous some of the scenes turned out to be.
Popular quotes like “I am Steve” and “As a child, I yearned for the mines” made circulations around the internet. Both have many different variations of the original quote whether in the youtube comment section or a post on reddit. Some examples either change the characters or use the quote to display a different content.
One of the most widespread jokes born from this movie was ‘Absolute Cinema.’ It has a simple format of the characters coincidentally referencing the subject, the subject pops out of the nether portal, and the ending ‘Absolute Cinema.’ This format has been excessively used on Minecraft youtubers and other related subjects.
Not only that, it has been spreading out to other fandoms. From Yu-Gi-Oh to Chainsaw Man, it has been making rounds. The origins of this meme even being unknown to some people.
As schadenfreude for the earlier copyright issue, here is a little nugget of knowledge. Warner Bros was clearly planning to create a website to reveal the last trailer. However, before they could get right to that, the domain name for the Minecraft movie was stolen from right under their noses by some guy. Now it’s being held hostage for a total of $1,000,000,000 if Warner Bros wants to use it.
