A new sport is making its mark at Arroyo High School, bringing energy, teamwork, and excitement to campus. STUNT, a competitive cheer-based sport that focuses on skills like stunts, jumps, and pyramids, is quickly gaining attention among students. Unlike traditional cheer, STUNT is all about head-to-head competition, testing strength, precision, and coordination. As Arroyo introduces this growing sport, students are stepping up to be part of something new and challenging.
This sport helps students build teamwork skills and dedication on the mat. The team consists of 16 athletes, led by captains Valerie Chavez (12), Emalina Bonilla (11), and Alyssa Jimenez (11).
Captain Valerie Chavez shares advice for future athletes interested in STUNT: “Make sure to always work hard, stay positive, and not get discouraged when things feel difficult. STUNT takes practice and teamwork, but if you stay dedicated, you will always im
prove.”
Each game is made up of rounds that include various cheerleading skills such as stunting, tumbling, and jumps. STUNT is a sport that relies on teamwork, strength, and trust. Every athlete plays an important and unique role on the team.
Co-captain Alyssa Jimenez explains her motivation for joining: “I wanted to join because I was already in cheer, and being a flyer was when I felt my happiest. The teamwork is something I really enjoy. Being with my team is one of the best feelings ever. Spending so much time together and building trust—especially for stunts—creates unbreakable bonds, which is why I wanted to try out. Becoming captain felt exciting and very motivating, and it still does. I enjoy helping lead the team, encouraging others, and making our team stronger as we continue to grow.”
As STUNT continues to grow at Arroyo High School, it is already creating a lasting legacy. What began as a new sport is quickly becoming a tradition built on teamwork, dedication, and trust, setting the foundation for future athletes to follow.
