As the end of this school year approaches, the ASB officers for the fall semester of next year have been elected: Stephanie Li, 11, was elected as President. Kamille Reyes, 10, was elected as Vice President. Felicia Le, 11, was elected as Secretary. Joseph Huerta, 11, was elected as Treasurer. Julianna Cativo, 11, was elected as Speaker of the Court. Karla Orozco, 11, was elected as Commissioner of Assemblies. Philip Heng, 11, was elected as Commissioner of Activities. Martin Rivera, 11, was elected as Commissioner of Boys Athletics, and Maya Chang, 11, was elected as Commissioner of Girls Athletics.
Li was officially sworn in as ASB President during the Renaissance Rally on May 20th.
“This position was one of my last goals in high school,” shares Li, who has been a part of ASB since the beginning of her freshman year. “I can’t wait to fulfill it with the best of my abilities.”
ASB fall semester elections were held on Friday, May 13, and the results of the election were announced on the following Monday, May 16th. Before voting took place, the candidates presented speeches in front of their classmates in Rally Square on the 12th. Prior even to that, Assistant Principal of Activities Oscar Gomez decided this year to set a precedent and post videos of the students’ speeches online for all to watch.
Other than giving speeches, most students campaigned by creating online flyers to post on social media accounts and posters to put up around campus.
The newly elected officers all understand the responsibilities that will commence once they begin the new semester, and they believe they are prepared to go above and beyond to do what’s best for the school.
“As secretary, I expect to be organized and take thorough notes, but as an officer, take charge when needed and make sure that everyone in ASB is doing their job,” asserts Le.
Li expresses, “I know that I want to go beyond what I know [the responsibilities] are. I expect responsibilities to be handled well with the help of the amazing group of officers that have joined me for the fall semester! We will push ourselves and the ASB commissioners to bring our best ideas and efforts in the next school year.”
By handling these various responsibilities, the officers also expect to pick up skills throughout the duration of their term that will be beneficial to their futures; For example, Huerta is expecting to learn organizational skills.
“I think being able to listen to both sides of an idea will help you in the future,” says Cativo, who will be working with student opinions during Knight’s Court meetings. “It’ll help you to … be able to communicate with others. It’s all about networking.
Reyes says, “The leadership skills I will learn will help me get into higher positions and to work for the things that I like.”
However, there will always be difficulties as an officer. With power comes responsibility, and the power of an ASB officer position is no exception.
Heng and Orozco will both play their roles in trying to energize school spirit during rallies, assemblies, and activities.
Orozco admits, “I’m expecting a lot of stress. I have a lot of pressure on me to make things fun, and to make sure everyone has a good time.”
Regardless of pressure, the elected officers still feel prepared and confident that they will make next semester successful.
